What is the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist?

There is no difference between podiatry and chiropody. They are two different words describing the same profession. All chiropodists have a degree in podiatry. A podiatrist or chiropodist will assess and treat your feet in the same way.

What are orthotics?

Orthotics or Orthoses are the medical name for insoles, which are prescribed to change the mecahnics of the feet. This can be due to structural abnormalities such as flat feet, or to relieve pressure on an injured area.

Do podiatrists treat children?

Yes, we regularly treat children at the clinic. The most common treatment administered for children is verrucae treatment.

I have diabetes, why do I need to take extra care of my feet?

Diabetes affects the blood and nerve supply to the feet. This can mean that you may not feel things as normal. BY getting your feet regularly check by a professional it can avoid any complications such as ulcers and infections.

What happens during treatment?

Each appointment involves a medical history, a full examination and individualized management plan prescribed for your needs.

Do I have to go up a flight of stairs?

Our podiatry treatment room is currently up a single flight of stairs. If you are unable to do this, please let us know in advance and we will ensure an alternative room is available for you. Please note our bathroom is up a single flight of stairs.

What is verruca surgery/verruca needling?

This is a minor surgical procedure where the entire foot and ankle is numbed with a local anesthetic. The verruca is then needled repeatedly. This is to stimulate a local inflammatory response to the area and stimulate heeling of really stubborn verrucae’s. It is currently the most effective treatment for verrucae’s.

What is nail surgery?

If an ingrown toe nail doesn’t respond to treatment the nail surgery may be required. This is the surgical removal of the nail. This is a minor surgical procedure which involves a local anesthetic to numb the foot.

What is a biomechanical assessment?

If you have pain when walking or running then a biomechanical assessment would benefit you. This is an assessment of you lower limb when moving, walking, jumping. Any issues can then be managed with exercises, manual therapy and sometimes orthotic (insole) prescription.
